Shopify SEO in 2026: The Practical Checklist to Rank Your Store on Google

A no-fluff Shopify SEO guide from a Bali-based team that builds stores for speed, structure, and conversions.

If you’re building a Shopify store and you want organic traffic that doesn’t depend on ads, SEO has to be part of the build — not an afterthought. The good news: Shopify is SEO-friendly by default. The bad news: most stores still struggle to rank because the structure, speed, and content foundations are weak.

In this post, we’ll share a practical Shopify SEO checklist we use when building and improving stores at TOLA Software (Bali-based, working with brands in Indonesia and overseas). You can apply this whether you’re launching a new store or fixing an existing one.

1) Start with the right Shopify store structure (SEO foundation)

Before keywords, before blog posts — your site structure needs to make sense for both customers and Google.

  • Collections map to how people search (e.g., “linen shirts”, “gold rings”, “vinyl flooring”).
  • Navigation matches collections and best sellers (avoid hidden categories).
  • Product types are consistent (no random naming across products).
  • Filters help users find items faster (and reduce bounce rate).

Pro tip: Don’t create 50 thin collections with 1–2 products each. Start with fewer, stronger collections with real intent.

2) Fix your on-page SEO (the stuff you control)

This is the core of Shopify SEO and it’s often overlooked. Your goal is clarity: tell Google and customers exactly what the page is about.

On product pages

  • Product title: clear, searchable, consistent
  • Description: benefits + specs + FAQs (not just 2 lines)
  • Image alt text: descriptive (not “IMG_1234”)
  • Unique content: avoid copying supplier descriptions

On collection pages

  • Collection intro text: 80–150 words explaining what customers will find
  • H1 is clean: one main heading, no messy duplicates
  • SEO title + meta description: written for humans, includes keywords naturally

3) Shopify speed optimization (yes, it affects SEO)

Google rewards good experiences. A fast store improves crawling, reduces bounce rate, and increases conversions.

Common speed killers on Shopify:

  • Too many apps injecting scripts on every page
  • Heavy images and unoptimized videos
  • Bloated theme code and unused sections
  • Third-party widgets loaded too early

What we typically do in a speed cleanup:

  • Compress + resize images properly (and standardize formats)
  • Remove/replace unnecessary apps
  • Defer non-critical scripts
  • Clean up theme sections and unused assets

4) Content strategy that actually brings traffic

SEO isn’t only about product pages. For many brands, the real long-term win is content that targets search intent.

Blog post types that work well on Shopify:

  • Buying guides: “How to choose ___”
  • Comparisons: “___ vs ___”
  • Problem/solution: “How to fix ___”
  • Use-cases: “Best ___ for ___”
  • Care guides: “How to maintain / clean / store ___”

Key rule: One topic per post. Go deep. Add visuals. Answer questions people actually Google.

5) Internal linking (the easiest SEO win)

Internal links help Google understand your site and help customers discover products faster.

  • Blog posts should link to relevant collections and best-selling products
  • Collections should link to sub-collections or featured products
  • Product pages should link to related items or bundles (careful: don’t overdo it)

When we build Shopify stores, we treat internal links like a map — every important page should be easy to reach.

6) Technical basics you shouldn’t ignore

  • Redirects: if you change URLs, use proper redirects (especially after migration)
  • Duplicate content: avoid creating multiple URLs for the same page
  • Indexing hygiene: keep low-value pages from being indexed where appropriate
  • Structured content: consistent product info helps search visibility

FAQs

How long does Shopify SEO take to work?

It depends on competition and consistency. SEO is a compounding channel — foundations first, then content and optimization.

Do I need a blog for Shopify SEO?

If you want to rank beyond branded keywords, a blog (and guides) often becomes the growth engine — especially for long-tail searches.

Can you do SEO without rebuilding the theme?

Yes. Many SEO wins come from structure, content, speed cleanup, and on-page fixes — even on an existing theme.
